The Nationals have a one-year deal with Kyle Schwarber pending a physical case, a source told Mark Feinsand, MLB.com. The club did not confirm the agreement.

Schwarber adds power to the series surrounding Juan Soto, who has now addressed the Nationals twice this off-season, with the addition of Josh Bell via trade at the end of December.

Schwarber was not offered by the Cubs this season after six seasons at the club.

With the national league teams under the assumption that there will be no universal designated hitter this year, Schwarber will play his normal position as a left fielder. This probably means that Soto would play the right field – his position in the minor. Soto played in his left field debut because Bryce Harper was the team’s right fielder and remained in position when Harper left for the Phillies. The manager, Dave Martinez, started Soto in the right field for the first time in the Majors in the last six games of the 2020 regular season.

Schwarber has -29 outs above average in the left field since 2017, the second least in the position behind only Matt Kemp (-32).
