Kyle Rudolph, released by Vikings, 49ers can target him as a free agent

The Minnesota Vikings announced the release of Pro Bowl tighthead Kyle Rudolph on Tuesday. While the 49ers will not have a lot of money to play with in free agencies, Rudolph is the type of player to whom they can allocate some of their resources.

San Francisco chased free agent TE Austin Hooper last season before becoming the most expensive permanent contract ever with the Cleveland Browns. If they are still looking for a striking TE option to pair with George Kittle, Rudolph makes a lot of sense.

At the age of 31, Rudolph’s days as a primary weapon probably lay behind him. Until last year, however, when he caught just one, he was still an effective scorer. The five years before that, he averaged six catches per season.

The former second-round pick is still a weapon in the red zone, smart enough to open up and physically fit enough to beat defenders on contention. Engaging him as a passer is a major upgrade for San Francisco over Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, who both mainly block TEs.

San Francisco should not be willing to break the bank for Rudolph, and if a team offers him beginner money, the 49ers will no longer run. On the other hand, if his market achieves something they can afford, the 49ers should absolutely aim to bring in the two-time Pro Bowler.
