Kuo: OLED iPad Air and Mini-LED MacBook Air coming next year

Rumors suggest that Apple will soon release a new iPad Pro with a Mini-LED screen, but the company also plans to bring this technology to other devices in the future. In a research note obtained by 9to5Mac, trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Mini-LED screens will be used in the MacBook Air by 2022, while the iPad Air will have an OLED screen in 2022.

Kuo points out that while Apple will now adopt Mini-LED screens for the new iPad Pro, other iPad models will switch to OLED screens, starting next year with iPad Air. Mini-LED panels offer the same benefits as OLEDs, such as deeper blacks, as the backlight is based on several small LEDs, but it does not suffer from burn-in.

However, as Mini-LED is a more expensive technology, Apple plans to bring OLED to the cheaper iPads, which include the iPad Air and the entry-level iPad. Unlike the iPhone, in which Apple had to use a custom OLED panel folded at the bottom, the OLED that the company will use in the iPad appears to be flat. This means that the cost of the new panels will be close to what Apple currently pays for each LCD panel used in the iPad Air.

According to the analyst, Apple does not intend to bring OLED to its productivity devices, due to concerns about burn-in, which may be more noticeable by users working for hours with the same software. Kuo says that by 2022, the MacBook Air will also get a Mini-LED screen, which will also increase the use of this technology.

He said earlier that Apple is also working on new redesigned MacBook Pros with Mini-LED, which is expected to be launched later this year. Bloomberg announced today that the next generation iPad Pro will be launched in April with Mini-LED, but only the larger 12.9-inch model will get the new panel.
