Kuo: iPhone 13 is likely to upgrade more than an ultra wide camera with improved poor light performance

According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 13 is now more likely to have an upgraded Ultra Wide camera with significantly improved performance in low light, thanks to improvements in lens verification and the greater competition in Apple’s camera supply chain.

In its latest investment letter from TFI Securities, seen by MacRumorsKuo says the verification of the iPad 5P lens from the Chinese supplier Sunny Optical went smoothly and it learned a lot from the process, which means that the probability that it will be a 7P wide-angle lens for the ‌iPhone 13‌ in the second half of 2021 will deliver. .

Kuo expects Sunny to begin mass delivery of its ‌iPad‌ 5P lens by the middle of the first quarter of 2021, which will provide Apple with about 15% of the parts due to limited initial production capacity. The report does not specify which ‌iPad‌ model the 5P lens is intended for, but the delivery ratio for both 5P and 7P lenses is expected to increase further between 20-20% and 25-30% in 2022.

According to Kuo, the greater competition from Sunny Optical will also put pressure on Largan, which is currently fueling a price war due to the significant technological advantages over other iPhone lens providers.

In November, Kuo predicted that the Ultra Wide cameras on the two high-end iPhone 13‌ models would be significantly upgraded to f / 1.8, 6P (six-element lens) with autofocus. All current ‌iPhone 12‌ models are equipped with f / 2.4, 5P (five-element lens) ultra wide cameras with fixed focus.

However, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley have suggested that all four iPhone 13 models have an upgraded Ultra Wide camera lens with a wider aperture of ƒ / 1.8, and there is conflicting information about exactly how many models the lens gets upgraded. Kuo expects the upgraded Ultra Wide lens to expand to the rest of the flagship ‌iPhone‌ range in the second half of 2022.
