King of Fighters XV: first game, 6 characters revealed

SNK Corporation formally unveiled The King of Fighters XV by debuting its game and featuring six characters. The game will be launched later this year. The announcement was initially Wednesday postponed and suffered a brief delay. Characters featured in a new trailer (below) include K ‘, Kyo Kusanagi, Leona, Benimaru, Shun’ei and Mai Shiranui. Not much is added in the detail, but we look at the visual style of the game, which looks a bit more stylized than KOF 14.Following the unveiling trailer, KOF XV, creative director Eisuke Ogura, and producer Yasuyuki Oda have revealed a bit more about how the game will play out when it launches in 2021.

“We focus on keeping the series at a fast pace, while also adding elements to make it more exciting,” Ogura notes. The developers are currently tweaking features and optimizing the game, but plan to ship in 2021. Another trailer for The King of Fighters XV will land next week to complement the unveiling.

Today’s trailer also features news on King of Fighters 14 Ultimate Edition – now digital – a new version of King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match on PS4, revealing Cham Cham and Hibiki Tanake from The Last Blade 2 as DLC characters for the Samurai Shodown Season 3 Pass. Samurai Shodown will also get a new version in March.

KOF XV was announced during EVO 2019, and we got our first look at the game in December 2020, which revealed that Benimaru, in addition to the characters above, would be playable. It is not yet clear on which platforms the game will be available.

Here’s our review of King of Fighters 14, which debuted in 2016. We scored an 8, with the ‘dated graphics and dodgy netcode’.
