Kills Off Standard Range RWD

On Thursday, January 7, 2021, Tesla updated its Model Y configurator to include the new standard range of rear-wheel drive.

We were not surprised to see that Tesla is finally releasing a cheaper version of the Model Y, although we were surprised that it was the Standard Range option. This is because CEO Elon Musk earlier said in a tweet that Tesla is not going to make a Model Y standard range because it has an ‘unacceptably low’ range of less than 250km.

Tesla has introduced the Model Y standard range with an EPA-estimated range of 244 miles. It has a starting price of $ 41,990. We say that it has been worn in the past time because the Model Y standard range is no longer offered on Tesla’s website. It is effectively dead again without explaining why. Maybe Musk again believes the series is too low?

In a comment posted on Reddit, a person with a Tesla Model Y Standard Range on request received an update from a Tesla customer service representative, stating:

“We no longer offer the custom standard range RWD Model Y, and we can only offer what is left in our stock, and honor orders for those who have already placed their deposits.”

The Model Y Standard Range was a single-engine rear-wheel drive crossover with a 5.3-second zero-to-60-mph time and a top speed of 135 mph. According to Tesla’s website, the estimated delivery time for the Model Y standard range is currently 2-5 weeks. Some episodes of this version have been done, but we do not know how many. You can see here how it fared in deep snow. This version cannot be ordered. See the screen below of Tesla’s Model Y order page:

By eliminating the Standard Range RWD variant, the effective price to buy the cheapest version of the Model Y now rises by about $ 7,000, which is very important. Ignore the $ 44,690 figure in the picture above, as it contains some “savings” that Tesla likes to offer. The actual starting price for the Long Range Model Y is $ 48,990, while the Standard Range Model Y sold for $ 41,990.

What do you think of Tesla removing the Standard Range variant of Model Y? Smart move? Or will it limit Model Y’s ability to compete effectively with vehicles like the upcoming Volkswagen ID.4?
