Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert is not committed to bringing fullback Ben Roethlisberger back to Pittsburgh for 2021.
The Steelers had earlier made it clear that Roethlisberger would not be back without a restructured contract. Roethlisberger has said he is willing to do his deal again, but that may not be enough for the Steelers.
“As we sit here today, Ben is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Colbert told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “He told us he wanted to keep playing. We told him to look against this current situation. ”
Colbert does not close the door when Roethlisberger returns, but he does indicate that Roethlisberger will have to take a steep pay cut.
‘Ben Roethlisberger did a lot of good things last year. We expect him to be able to do really good things going forward. Hopefully we can figure out how to do what’s best for the organization and for Ben. Hopefully he will be able to see it, “said Colbert.
Under his current contract, Roethlisberger has a large cap of $ 41.25 million for the 2021 season, and the Steelers are about $ 30 million more than the cap. A decision will certainly come before March 19, if the Steelers, according to his current contract, are still in the team, the Roersers will have to pay a $ 15 million roster bonus.
