Although the main focus of the Detroit Lions’ off-season right now is the future of Matthew Stafford and what the Lions can get in return, the team will soon have to focus their attention on the second-best player in the rankings. The wide receiver, Kenny Golladay, has a new contract that expired after the previous regime did not sign him to an extension in 2020.
The new front office has yet to comment on Golladay’s future with the team, but the Lions – wide receiver joined him on Thursday morning at ‘Good Morning Football’ and gave him some insight into where he is.
The first question Golladay was asked was about the status of his hip injury, which has cost him the last nine games of the 2020 season. His answer was quite revealing.
“I feel really good now. I am very excited to get back to work. Coach Campbell came up with that energy. I try to adjust the same energy that he came up with. ”
Unsolicited, he brings up the new Lions head coach Dan Campbell and speaks as if he is already his new head coach. Later, the “Good Morning Football” staff asked him directly about Campbell and his entertaining press conference.
“I’m not going to lie, when I first saw it, I died laughing, but I loved it,” Golladay said. ‘This is the energy I’m talking about. He set the tone there. I think we’re going to bite off some kneecaps. ‘
Golladay’s apparent eagerness to stay in Detroit is no surprise. This is in line with what he said for the whole of 2020. He said how grateful he is that he was drafted by the Lions and said he would not bother to spend his entire career in Detroit.
But the Lions face a difficult decision. With so much roster turnover expected under the new regime, can they afford to spend a lot of money on the wide receiver post? With Marvin Jones Jr., who also wants to start the free agency, does it make sense to spend a lot of money on one man and maybe set up another? The franchise label – which raised about $ 17.9 million last year – is also on the table.
Another factor is the team’s fullback. Golladay did not mention whether the final trade of Matthew Stafford would affect his decision to return or not, but he had many nice things to say about his quarterback.
“He’s a real leader, so wherever he goes, they’ll get a real competitor,” Golladay said. “The guy is going to play through anything. He never wants to miss a game. I don’t even know how he ended the season with some injuries he had, but I think everyone in this league knows what you are going to get from Staff. ”
Overall, though, it sounds like Golladay is still very much willing to stay in Detroit if the price is right. Now we will have to wait and see if the feeling is mutual.
