At the age of 21, Kate Winslet reached superstar when she played Rose Dewitt Bukater in James Cameron’s big movie “Titanic” in 1997 – but fame came at a price.
‘I immediately switched to self-protection mode [after ‘Titanic’ came out], the British star said on Thursday on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast.
“It was like day and day from one day to the next,” the 45-year-old recalls. “I have undergone a lot of personal physical examination. I have been criticized a lot and the British press has been quite unfriendly to me.
“I feel bullied if I’m honest,” she admitted. “I remember thinking, ‘It’s awful and I hope it passes.’ It certainly succeeded, but it made me realize that, if that’s what I’m famous for, I’m not ready to be famous. Certainly not. ‘

Winslet received an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Actress’, but lost Helen Hunt for ‘As Good As It Gets’. Instead of pursuing big Hollywood movies, Winslet decided to hone her craft and instead embark on indie productions.
It was only in 2009 when she won an Oscar for ‘Best Actress’, this time for ‘The Reader’.
“I still learned how to act,” she explained. “I felt like I was not prepared to do very big Hollywood tasks. I did not want to make mistakes and blow it. I wanted to be in it for a long time. I tried to find strategically small things so that I could understand the rig. a little better and maintain a degree of privacy and dignity. ‘
At age 25, Winslet welcomes a child, a daughter named Mia Honey Threapleton. She attributed motherhood to helping her take less notice of the press.

“All the stuff evaporates a little,” she said.
Winslet reunited with Cameron (66). This time it is for the sequel “Avatar”, which is currently being produced in post-production. The film is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
She previously worked with her ‘Titanic’ co-star Leonardo DiCaprio in 2008’s ‘Revolutionary Road’.
This year, Winslet is considered an Oscar contender for her lead role in ‘Ammonite’, Deadline reports.
