Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, honored Queen Elizabeth II in a moving way during the funeral of Prince Philip.
The former Kate Middleton arrived at the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral and donned jewelery from the Queen’s collection. The Duchess wears the queen’s square pearl necklace for today’s ceremony, which is connected by a diamond clasp at the front.
The Duchess paired the necklace with a black shackle, a black veil and a long black coat to mourn the Duke of Edinburgh. As one of the 30 guests who attended the ceremony, Prince William and Kate both wore black face masks to comply with the strict COVID-19 guidelines.
It was reported that the queen had the necklace made years before with pearls donated to her by the Japanese government. The pearl necklace has been worn by the Queen on several occasions over the years, including a royal engagement in Bangladesh in 1983.
Kate also paid tribute to another member of the royal family through her choice of jewelry: Princess Diana. The mother of William and Prince Harry wore the necklace for a special occasion in 1982 and borrowed the elegant choker from the Queen for a royal banquet at Hampton Court Palace.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have not made a public appearance since Philip’s death last week.
Prince William made a statement by Kensington Palace on Monday 12 April to pay tribute to their grandfather. Kensington Palace shared a moving photo along with the statement Kate took of Philip sharing a special moment with his great-grandson, Prince George (7).
“I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her,” William said in part in his statement. “I will take for granted the special memories my children will always have, of their great-grandfather who came to fetch them in his carriage, and see for themselves their contagious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous humor!”
“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation,” William concluded his statement. ‘Catherine and I will continue to do what he wants and will support the Queen in the years to come. I’ll miss my Grandpa, but I know he wants us to get on with the job. ‘
