Kate Middleton visited on Saturday to a memorial to Sarah Everard, the London woman who was murdered last week when she walked home from a friend’s apartment.
The Duchess of Cambridge held an unannounced stop at Clapham Common Bandstand to add a bouquet there.
Kensington Palace said Middleton “wants to pay tribute to the family and Sarah”, SkyNews reported. “She remembers what it was like to walk around London at night before she got married.”
The murder of Everard has given rise to a new settlement for Britons over the safety of women.
Organizers had hoped to hold a vigil for women’s safety at the memorial site later Saturday, but were denied a permit due to the pandemic. Instead, Londoners are urged to shine a light on their doorstep at 9:30 p.m.
Earlier Saturday, Wayne Couzens, 48, a police officer who patrolled embassies in London, made his first appearance in court. He is charged with kidnapping and murder in Everard’s death.
