Michigan coach Juwan Howard allegedly threatened Maryland coach Mark Turgeon before being sent off in the second half of Friday’s Big Ten quarterfinals.
Maryland said at the conference that Howard told Turgeon, “I’ll kill you,” InsideMDSports.com reported, citing an unnamed source.
According to the report, no formal complaint was lodged. Howard is not expected to be disciplined, which means he will coach Ohio State in the semifinals on Saturday.
The two coaches had to be separated by officials and other staff members after a screaming match between the benches broke out in the second half of the 79-66 victory of Wolverines.
Turgeon told reporters he called Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren about Michigan teasing his bench during two games in the regular season.
When it happened again on Friday when Michigan sailed to a win, Turgeon said he was not going to take the third game. And so I stood up for my team, I stood up for myself. ”
He was charged with one technical foul, but he further coached the game while Howard was thrown out after committing two technical fouls.
Michigan freshman Hunter Dickinson hit the Maryland bench during a win on New Year’s Eve, but the report states that Howard does the same rather than restrict his players.
“We have incredible passionate coaches, incredible passionate players, incredible passionate fans,” Warren told Big Ten Network. ‘As with all of this, our office is judging it from a sportsmanship policy point of view that we did following the match. And no further action will be taken. We feel the officials handled it appropriately in court and spread the situation. ”
It seemed like Howard was pointing to the Maryland bench to start the fracas, but he later said he was trying to make a call with officials when Turgeon said, ‘Juwan, I’m not going to let you do not talk! You never talk to me again! ”
