Justin Herbert: Anyone should strive to be like Tom Brady

Tom Brady played almost as long as Justin Herbert lived.

Herbert, 22, is hoping for at least Brady’s success.

‘I think someone must strive to be like “Tom Brady, to achieve as much success as he could as long as he could,” the Chargers quarterback told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I do not think there is anyone who has ever done such a thing. To win, the ultimate goal of the quarterback position is to put your team in the position to win. He could do it. He’s a competitor, and he’s finding a way to win, and I think that’s the best part of it. ”

Herbert had a better rookie season than Brady. Brady played just one game, without starting, and threw just three passes.

Herbert achieved offensive rookies of the year in 2020, with 4,336 yards with 31 shots and 10 interceptions. Brady did not throw for more yards or more touchdowns, until his eighth season when he passed for 4,806 yards and 50 touchdowns.

But Brady obviously won his first of seven Super Bowls in his second season.

Herbert passed as an appetizer 6-9 in 2020, but the Chargers, one might argue, were better than their record. They have a new head coach and hope for 2021.

While the Chargers could easily be better in 2021, Herbert expects it to be.

“I think I can keep learning about the game,” he said. ‘I think if I know more about defense, coverage, pressure, all that, I think it helps our team better, and I think if I can master the playbook and know exactly what we’re doing, why do we do it, so I’m in a wonderful play can end up if I see a certain front and see a certain pressure.
