Hilton Valentine, founding member of The Animals, dies at 77

Hilton Stewart Paterson Valentine, founding member of the British rhythm and blues group The Animals, passed away on 29 January. He was 77 years old. The record company The Animals and Valentine, Abkco Records, confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Friday. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Hilton Valentine when he passed away this morning at the age of 77,” the label wrote. “A founding member and original guitarist of The Animals, Valentine was a groundbreaking guitarist who influenced the sound of rock and roll for decades.” Valentine was born in Northumberland, England and joined The Animals in 1963, along with existing members (and original bass player) Chas Chandler and singer Eric Burdon. Valentine quickly helped the new group catapult with his work on their song “House of the Rising Sun” – his arpeggio reef, which introduces the song, is now considered a classic.
