Jets GM Joe Douglas Gives Organizational Power

On the day the Jets proposed Robert Saleh as their new coach, they also said Joe Douglas, general manager, has more power.

Saleh will now report directly to Douglas, and Douglas will report to owners Woody and Christopher Johnson. The Jets’ last three GM / coach combinations reported directly to the Johnsons, making them equal in the organization. Now Douglas has got a bump, a sign of the Johnsons’ faith in their GM.

“The structure has changed,” Christopher Johnson said. ‘Joe will report to me [and Woody]. Robert will report to Joe. It seems like a clean and simple way of doing things, but really does not change much. We already have very good communication. I do not think it’s really going to change things that way. ”

The organizational structure was a point of concern for the Jets fans, but many teams in the league (about half) have the same structure. The Jets’ problem was that people in that job did not report to whom they were.

Woody Johnson plans to take control of the team again soon, as his term as ambassador to the UK ended on Wednesday. Christopher Johnson, who led the team in Woody’s absence, will retain a major role in the organization, but Woody will again be the ultimate decision maker.

The Jets have officially announced the appointment of Mike LaFleur as offensive coordinator and Jeff Ulbrich as defensive coordinator. LaFleur comes to the Jets of the 49ers, for which he played the coordinator of the game. Ulbrich was the Falcons’ lineout coach before he was promoted to defense coordinator after the team fired Dan Quinn and promoted Raheem Morris to interim head coach.

Saleh has not yet appointed a coordinator for special teams, but said he would retain Brant Boyer, who has been with the Jets since 2016, when former coach Todd Bowles appointed him. He said he is also considering retaining defensive coach Dennard Wilson, who has been with the Jets since 2017.

The other hiring staff that Saleh announced were: Rob Calabrese (quarterback), John Benton (attacking line), Taylor Embree (backs), Ron Middleton (tight end), Miles Austin (wide receivers), Greg Knapp (specialist in passing). match), Billy VandeMerkt (attacking assistant), Aaron Whitecotton (defensive line), Nate Ollie (assistant defensive line), Ricky Manning Jr. (Defense Assistant), Hayes Pullard (Defense Assistant).

Saleh also retained three coaches from Adam Gase’s staff: Todd Washington (attacking assistant), Mack Brown (attacking assistant) and Chip Vaughn (defensive assistant).

Saleh talked a lot about DT Quinnen Williams. The 49ers picked up No. 2 in 2019 when the Jets put Williams in third place, and Saleh explored Williams.

“I absolutely love Quinnen,” Saleh said. ‘Really excited to get the seat belt off his harness and let him go. In this scheme of moving him vertically, of moving all the masses in the direction he needs, I’m very excited about the potential he’s going to have. Love him for coming out. It’s clear that we have taken [Nick] Bosa. He was only there as part of the discussion. I can assure you of that. As for this young man, his mindset, his athleticism, his strength, his love of football, are very excited to see him in our system, especially up front with the way we design with the attacking style up front. ”
