Jeep’s ‘Magneto’ electric Wrangler concept is a big annoyance

Jeep unveiled a new electric vehicle with an X-Men-inspired name: the Wrangler Magneto. However, do not get hope for it, this is the electric Jeep Wrangler you have wished for – the Magneto is just a concept car, and you will probably not be able to buy one anytime soon.

The car’s design is based on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, but it has an electric motor that offers up to 273 pounds of torque and 285 horsepower, and it is equipped with an 800 volt system spread over four batteries, according to Jeep . The company has not shared a range for how far the Magneto can go without incurring costs, but that’s not too surprising given that it’s a concept car.

Interestingly, the Magneto is also equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. And while this may be surprising, since most electric cars have single-speed transmissions, the Magneto is not actually the first electric concept car with a gearbox. In November 2019, Ford unveiled a six-speed manual transmission, all-electric Mustang, the Mustang Lithium.

Jeep’s parent company Fiat Chrysler (now called Stellantis) was slow to adopt EVs, and with GMC’s Hummer EV and Rivian’s R1T pickup in the shortest possible time, Stellantis could run the risk of losing customers if it does not have a electric version of the Jeep, one of its most iconic cars. And while Stellantis has made some bold promises about its plans for electric vehicles, the Magneto has a shortage of content to show that any kind of electric Wrangler will appear soon.
