Jasmine Harrison becomes the youngest woman to row solo across the sea

It took the 21-year-old 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

A British woman became the youngest woman to ever row solo across the ocean by completing a 3,000-mile voyage across the Atlantic.

Jasmine Harrison, 21, was inspired to take part in the challenge after seeing a similar race in 2018, she wrote on Twitter. At the time, she went swimming in the Caribbean and ‘decided there and then she wants to do it’.

This year, 21 boats from around the world took part in the challenge, which included some solo rowers and others with teams of up to four rowers, according to Atlantic Campaigns, which organizes the challenge “The World’s Toughest Row”.

Harrison started in the Canary Islands in Spain on December 12 and arrived in Antigua on Saturday – 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes – according to Atlantic Campaigns.

The organization regularly gave notice of where Harrison was. She achieved the feat by sleeping and rowing every two hours.

Harrison also posted weekly updates on her Instagram page and shared adventures, such as when she came across a striped marlin and rowed through a piece of water covered with seaweed.

Harrison suffered a setback Thursday when her boat, about 100 miles away, capsized, according to Atlantic Campaigns. At the time, she also informed her security officer that she had injured her left elbow, and that the travel doctor had walked through with her by telephone, the organization reported.

Only a few hours later, Harrison told the race doctor that she was ‘much happier and calmer’, working through the pain and being able to complete the race without help.

“Rowing an ocean is not over before you step ashore safely, the risks remain and there is no time to relax,” the organization said in a statement at the time.

As his country approached, Harrison held smoke signals in each hand and held a British flag ashore once.

When asked by reporters what the first thing she wants to do is walk to land, she replies: ‘Food. Definitely food. ‘

Harrison’s adventures also raised more than $ 14,000 for disaster relief NGO Shelterbox.

Before Harrison, the American was Katie Spotz, the youngest woman to row across the ocean, who crossed from east to west in 2010 at the age of 22.

ABC News’s Christine Theodorou contributed to the report.
