We made this joke for years and Jared Leto just said it.
Well, it happened. On Sunday, the official trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League confirmed director Zack Snyder is extremely online. The run-up to the release of the official trailer was exciting. Over the past few weeks, new details, photos and teaser videos have been unveiled with the premiere of HBO Max Zack Snyder’s Justice League. This past week we took a closer look at it Jared Leto‘s Joker, which will jump from 2016 Suicide Squad and in Snyder’s cut of Justice League, as well as a preview with the big bad of Snyder’s film, Darkseid.
Speaking of Leto’s Joker, he’s actually part of the reason why we now believe that Snyder is more in tune with the times than we previously thought. At the very end of the official trailer, we get a preview of Joker’s scene with Batman (Ben Affleck). In the clip, Joker looks out over a post-apocalyptic desert. As he does so, he tells Batman, “We live in a society where honor is a distant memory. Isn’t that right, Batman?”
If you’ve been extraordinarily online like Snyder, then you know that ‘We live in a society’ has been the most important fuel for years. This is a phrase that, although not originally said by Joker, has become the shorthand for describing his pessimistic and chaotic outlook on life. It was also a phrase that lived most of his life on the internet. To hear it said by the one character so closely associated with it was quite astonishing – a fact that Leto admitted then did he tweet again the Snyder Cut trailer and endorsed it with: “We live in a society.”
The phrase “We live in a society” became synonymous with Joker as the meme culture became further entangled with social media. In fact, as Mashable reminds us, the “We live in a society” piece started as edgelord meme material and has risen in popularity to the point that it now feels like Harley Quinn is hitting us over her head with her comic big wooden hammer when it appears online. In 2019, fans went so far as to launch a petition from Change.org Joaquin Phoenix says: “We live in a society” in Todd Phillips‘ joker. And while that did not happen, they did not have to wait too long for the Snyder Cut. Justice League trailer confirmed it as a canon when Leto’s Joker said those five magic words to the whole world on Sunday.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18 on HBO Max. Check out some of the most poignant and viral reactions to Joker’s infamous rule below. For more information, find out what’s coming out at HBO Max this month.
credit where credit is due: to actually let Leto Joker say “we live in a society” in the trailer is a grade A troll and I respect that

To make the joke say, “we live in a society” is, of course, an elusive glare from Zack, but the trailer editor who places the line directly over the title card, ensuring that it is the image that is guaranteed, deserves it. an increase
