Japan’s Super Nintendo World Opening Delayed Due to COVID-19

Universal Studios Japan’s Super Nintendo World theme park would open on February 4th. But on Thursday, the company announced plans to postpone the opening, due to a COVID-19 peak and an ’emergency statement’ in Osaka prefecture. The park will now open sometime after February 4, when the state of emergency is no longer in effect. Due to the nature of the pandemic, it is completely unclear when it will be.

This postponement comes less than a month after Nintendo devoted an entire Direct to the new theme park. Nintendo and Universal Studios Japan have been spending fans across the park over the past year unveiling the fantastic food, as well as the Kart-themed ride, Koopa’s Challenge.

Universal Studios will eventually open a version of Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando. The company has not given a timeline for these expansions and will probably only officially open the Universal Studios Japan version first.

It has been a difficult year for theme parks, as COVID-19 has proven to be too dangerous to visit reasonably. But one day – hopefully sooner rather than later – the world will reopen and we can finally get our hands on the Mario Pancake Sandwich.
