Jacksonville Jaguars head coach defends hires of controversial coach

The NFL team announced Thursday that they have hired Chris Doyle, the former strength and conditioning coach of the University of Iowa, to be the team’s director of sports performance.

Doyle, who was at the University of Iowa from 1999-2019, was placed on administrative leave by the school in June after several former players in Iowa accused him of racism. Shortly afterwards, the university and Doyle agree to separate.

Meyer, who was hired by the Florida team in January after the team fired Doug Marrone, defended the hiring defense, saying his relationship with Doyle dates back 20 years.

Meyer watched it during the Big Ten Championship game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Northwestern Wildcats while working as a TV analyst.
“I feel great about the hire, about his expertise in that position,” Meyer said during its media availability Thursday.

“I do vets for everyone in our staff, and like I said, the relationship stretches almost 20 years ago and a lot of hard questions are asked. A lot of research has been done on all our staff. We have done a very good job to one to be judged. “

Meyer previously served in the university ranks at the University of Utah, University of Florida, and most recently in the state of Ohio.

Meyer added: “I have known the person for almost 20 years, and I can assure them that there will be nothing in the Jaguar facility.”

Meyer said he does not believe the accusations of racism attributed to Doyle in Iowa will prevent Jacksonville from attracting free agents.
Shortly after being placed on administrative leave in Iowa in June 2020, Doyle posted a statement on Twitter – which has since been removed – saying the allegations about his behavior were “not true.”

Other jobs Meyer has created on his first NFL staff include former Detroit Lions interim head coach Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator and Joe Cullen as defense coordinator.
