An earth with rocky cliffs off the Italian coast near Genoa on Monday was the scene of a landslide that caused the collapse of a cemetery there.
CNN reported that the collapse of Camogli Cemetery dropped hundreds of coffins into the sea. The cemetery was built along the rocky cliffs more than 100 years ago.
Camogli Mayor Francesco Olivari called the crash an “unimaginable disaster”, according to CNN.
Although the number of coffins that fell is estimated at 200, CNN quoted Giacomo Giampedrone, regional civil protection judge, as saying that “only ten have been recycled” and that the restoration of the rest “depends on the sea in the coming days. ”
Maintenance carried out along the fragile shoreline was abruptly stopped on Saturday after workers noticed cracks in the rock, CNN said.
CNN quoted Olivari as saying to them on Monday: “We are working on a section of the rocky coast – it was close to the area that fell today.” He added, ‘Some signs of cracks have been seen. We decided to close the cemetery. ”
Olivari told CNN that Ligurian civil protection officials were “called” to intervene and evaluate the situation. He explained that drones were being used by a team of geologists at the department to get a better sense of the damage and to determine if there was a danger of another landslide. ‘
“This kind of collapse that took place today is very difficult to detect or predict,” Olivari said. “This area is subject to this kind of collapse – it’s very fragile,” CNN said.
Giampedrone said the coastal area under the cemetery was blocked Monday night by Genoa port authorities so the coffins could not float to the sea, according to CNN.
CNN added that officials said Tuesday that work on recovering coffins and corpses will continue during the investigation into the site.
