With the release of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple has added a new LiDAR scanner to the rear camera range for depth observation features. Now, a new supply chain report from Digitimes says that Apple will expand the LiDAR sensor further than the ‘Pro’ models with this year’s iPhone 13.

The Digitimes The report focuses broadly on the time frame sensor industry, specifically on the supply chain and the use of Android manufacturers. In the report, however, there is one small thing that the LiDAR scanner currently exclusively for the iPhone 12 Pro with the iPhone 13 will come to “all 2021 iPhone models”.
Apple has adopted dToF LiDAR scanner in the iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro series, and is expected to apply the scanner technology to all of its 2021 iPhone models, which will be available with Face ID sensors, the sources said.
The report further explains that Apple has signed an agreement with Sony that ensures that LiDAR scanners will be used on the iPhone until at least 2023:
Sony has reportedly, in the supply chain for Apple devices, signed a three-year contract with Apple to launch a new generation near-infrared (NIR) GOS with a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) – series for dToF LiDAR scanner, indicating that Apple will use the scanner in iPhones and other devices by at least 2023, the sources said.
We still do not know much about what we can expect from this year’s iPhone release, whether it’s the iPhone 12S, the iPhone 13 or something completely different. Earlier today, a separate supply chain indicated that the iPhone could offer 13 mmWave 5G support to additional countries.
