Israel hits Hamas targets after Gaza rocket

The Israeli army hit targets in the Gaza Strip early Friday, hours after Palestinian terrorists fired a rocket into southern Israel in the coastal enclave.

A statement from the Israeli military said fighter jets and other aircraft were hitting a number of sites linking Hamas, the Islamic terrorist organization that controls Gaza. The targets, according to the IDF, included a weapons production facility, a weapons smuggling tunnel and a Hamas military post.

“The attack was carried out in response to the rocket fired from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory earlier tonight,” the statement said.

The army did not specifically blame Hamas for the rocket fire on Thursday night, but Israel stressed that it held the terrorist group responsible for all violence arising from Gaza.

The rocket, which was shot down as Independence Day came to an end, struck a field northeast of Gaza and left no one injured or injured.

The rocket attack caused sirens in the city of Sderot and the nearby communities of Nir Am and Ibim.

The attack came amid a general silence in the Gaza Strip violence over the past few months amid a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Last month, a rocket was fired at Beersheba when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stopped a campaign in the southern city ahead of the March 23 election.
