Islanders hold Devils down for the eighth consecutive victory

Kieffer Bellows scored his first two goals of the season early in the third period, and the Islanders beat the Devils 3-2 on Saturday in Prudential Center for their eighth consecutive victory.

Oliver Walhstrom also passed and Semyon Varlamov struck 26 times to help the Islanders lead their points to 10-0-1 after 11 games.

The finish line for the Islanders is the longest since they won ten last season. The team record is early 1982 1982 15.

Pavel Zacha and Janne Kuokkanen passed for the Devils, who lost ten at home. Mackenzie Blackwood made 26 saves for the Devils.

Island coach Barry Trotz, who unconditionally put Bellows on his top line with Anders Lee with a leg injury, said the 19th overall pick from the 2016 draft has evolved.

“Kieffer got the ball at the beginning of the year and did OK, but then we started rolling a bit and he had to sit down,” Trotz said. ‘He tries to make a statement, he sees opportunity and he uses it for one game. Let’s see if he can do it again. But I was impressed.

Bellows tied it at 2, with Mathew Barzal taking a pass and Blackwood beating 1:59 of the third period between the circles.

Bellows played in his first NHL game since Feb. 18 and only his ninth of the season, giving the Islanders a 5:10 lead. He takes a pass from Jordan Eberle in center ice, makes a power motion of the right circle and beats Blackwood up close.

“Getting a point obviously gives you a little more play and you know it gives you more confidence,” said Bellows, the son of former NHL player Brian Bellows. “But without Ebs and Barzie on both plays, I would not have succeeded either.”

Zacha gave the Devils the lead early in the first period and Walhstrom secured it later in the period with a shooting shot on a rush.

Kuokkanen gave the Devils the lead at 1:04 of the second period and dived to throw a rebound into an open net. He has goals in three straight.

Veteran Travis Zajac said the team needs to stay focused despite the recent shift.

“It doesn’t help anything to look at the standings or to worry about what other teams are doing or where we are,” said Zajac, who had some help with Kuokkanen’s goal. ‘It’s a waste of energy. Our energy is going to be spent trying to win one game and break down from there to even smaller things, winning your shift. win a period and play the right way. ‘

The teams will be back in Newark late Sunday afternoon for their third game against each other.
