Is Verizon FiOS off? Internet disruption spanning the northeastern US

Verizon FiOS customers across the Northeast suffered a slow and mocking Internet service during an apparent outage on Tuesday.

More than 21,000 users in New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and other major East Coast cities said they were having trouble loading web pages and that they were experiencing loading speed for uploading and downloading, according to the website Downdetector.com which monitors the outage.

The problems of Downdetector show that the problems started to occur around 11:30.

Verizon customers complained on Twitter about the issues, where the telecommunications giant said it was investigating a possible outage attributable to a fiber optic cable cut in Brooklyn.

“There is a fiber cut, and our technicians know it; [they are] resolving it as soon as possible, ” Verizon tweeted.

According to Downdetector, users have also reported interruptions to a wide range of major Internet services, including Verizon, including Zoom, Gmail, Microsoft Office 365, and Amazon Web Services.

These services are crucial for people who work at home and students who go to distance school due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is unclear whether the reported outages are related to the Verizon problems.

Amazon Web Services said some East Coast customers experienced a “connection issue” with an Internet service provider from 11:26 to 12:46, but AWS’s own services operate normally.
