Nearly a year ago, the Covid-19 pandemic had just begun boosting U.S. stocks. The prospect of a year of stagnation in the US at the time still seemed far-fetched. And yet, the

S&P 500 Index

is 16% higher than a year ago.

Investors are optimistic about the hope that the coming months will be normal again as states introduce Covid-19 vaccinations. For now, traders in the United States will have some time for Presidents Day.

The federal holiday, dating back to 1885 and established to recognize George Washington, takes place on the third Monday of February. It has since expanded to celebrate all U.S. presidents. Is the stock market open on President’s Day 2021?

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq closed on Monday, February 15th. US bond markets and over-the-counter markets will also be closed for the day. Both senior U.S. exchanges will reopen Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.

Were international markets closed on President’s Day 2021?

The Shanghai Stock Exchange is closed until Wednesday, local time. This is because of the new lunar year, not President’s Day. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange closed on Monday for the fourth day of the New Year. The Toronto Stock Exchange closed on February 15 for Family Day in Canada.

The London Stock Exchange and the Tokyo Stock Exchange will be open during normal trading hours on Monday.

What about the rest of the week?

Some American schools are closed for holidays all week from President’s Day. Traders may want to do the same.

Back in February 1971, the S&P 500 index averaged a 0.1% drop on Tuesday following Presidential Day, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The average performance during the week of President’s Day is down 0.05%, with the index rising in the middle of the 50 weeks.
