Iran arrests ‘Israeli spy’ in eastern Azerbaijan

Iran has arrested an ‘Israeli spy’ and a number of other people who were in contact with foreign intelligence services, Iranian state media reported on Monday without giving the citizenship of the detainees.

“An Israeli spy was arrested in the province of East Azerbaijan in Iran … other spies who were in contact with several countries’ intelligence services were also arrested,” a Ministry of Intelligence official said.

Israeli officials did not immediately comment on the report.

The Islamic Republic does not recognize Israel and accuses it of being behind sabotage and killings of nuclear scientists.

An Iranian convicted of spying for American and Israeli intelligence was executed in 2020.

Iran has blamed Israel for the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was seen by Western intelligence services as the mastermind of a secret Iranian nuclear weapons program.

Tehran denied that it wanted to build a nuclear arsenal. Israel did not confirm or deny the murder.
