iPhone wins Christmas, claims top 9 places for new smartphone activations in US

According to new data from Flurry Analytics, Apple once again dominated Christmas Day smartphone activations in the US. The data indicates that on Christmas Day, the iPhone represents nine of the ten best smartphone activations this year, although the total activation was lower than in 2019.

Interestingly, the iPhone 11 was the most popular iPhone activated on Christmas Day, followed by the iPhone XR and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Compared to the previous 7-day average activation, however, the iPhone XR was flat, indicating that it was not necessarily a popular gift, but that it is still a strong seller in Apple’s range.

The iPhone 11 was the most activated device on Christmas Day, with activations 5% higher compared to the 7-day average between December 18 and December 24. In the case of the iPhone XR, the number of activations on Christmas Day was relatively equal to the lag of 7 days on average, meaning that it was not necessarily a popular gift for Christmas, but still a popular smartphone for Apple customers.

Another interesting great thing from the analysis is that the iPhone SE experienced the biggest boom of Christmas Day compared to the previous 7-day average. iPhone SE activation rose 34% on Christmas Day compared to the previous 7-day average. The iPhone 12 mini is nowhere to be found on the list this year, which adds more fuel to the claims that it is a reasonable niche product for Apple.

The flagship iPhone 12 mini, which contains the features of the iPhone 12 in a smaller device, is absent from this year’s list. However, with a discount of only $ 100 compared to the iPhone 12, the mini version has not yet attracted the attention of consumers.

In total, new smartphone activations fell by 23% on Christmas Day this year compared to Christmas Day 2019. This can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic:

Activation this year is 23% lower than a year-on-year year, probably due to the financial hardships caused by COVID-19. Another possibility is that the fact that Americans are encouraged to stay home and limit family gatherings may spread gift distribution more over the days before and after Christmas. Note that shortly after the new year we will report on the full month of December to get a more complete picture.
