Apple has apparently canceled its plans to add a feature to the iPhone 13, similar to Samsung’s PowerShare. With the feature, users would be able to charge devices like AirPods wirelessly via the internal battery of their phone.
According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple ‘internally discussed a goal to charge many of its mobile devices such as Apple Watches, AirPods and iPhones, but that functionality is unlikely in the near future. For the 2019 iPhones, Apple has planned, but canceled, a feature that allows users to charge AirPods on the back of the phone. ‘
This is not to say that Apple does not want to find a wireless charging solution along the way. Gurman is told that Apple is working on a magnetically attached battery pack that would click on the iPhone 12 with the MagSafe.
Unlike previous iPhone battery extenders, this is not a case. It would simply be a battery, covered with a white rubber exterior, that wirelessly recharged your phone and other accessories.
According to internal tests, the battery could remain in place. But the development stopped due to an error indicating that the suit was overheated, when in fact it is not.
Just because a product is allegedly developed at Apple does not, of course, indicate an actual release. In 2017, Apple announced the AirPower mat that could charge multiple devices simultaneously. The carpet was eventually canceled due to overheating issues.
As far as wireless charging and MagSafe are concerned, this seems to be the future that Apple is looking at. There are already rumors about the MagSafe appearing on MacBooks in 2021. And if a portable iPhone 13 ever comes into being, as rumor has it, MagSafe will be the only way to keep the phone charged.
