iPadOS 14.5 brings emoji searches and a new landscape launcher to the iPad

In addition to the major changes made with iOS 14.5, such as the ability to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch, there are some small but noticeable changes in iPadOS 14.5. For the first time, the iPad now supports emoji search and a new landscape screen.

Emoji Search came on the iPhone last fall with iOS 14, but it was strangely lacking in iPadOS until the release of iPadOS 14.4 this week. With this version, iPad users can now search for the specific emoji they want to use.

To use this feature, simply open the emoji selector from the iPadOS keyboard and you will see a brand new search field. It works with either the software keyboard or if you have a standalone keyboard, such as the Magic Keyboard, connected to your iPad.

Another small but noticeable change in iPadOS 14.5, is a landscape launcher screen seen for the first time 9to5Mac reads Steven. If you start your iPad now, the Apple logo will be displayed properly when paired with a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard. If not paired with a Magic Keyboard or Smart Keyboard, the Apple logo is still displayed in portrait orientation.

These are small features compared to the other changes in iOS 14.5, but it is still noticeable for iPad and iPad Pro users. Emoji search was specifically a notable failure when iPadOS 14 was released last fall.
