Iowa mother and son arrested in Capitol riot, FBI says

A Iowa mother and her son were arrested Friday in connection with the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, the FBI said.

Deborah Sandoval, of Des Moines, and Salvador Sandoval Jr., of nearby Ankeny, were arrested on federal warrants, the FBI said in a statement.

The couple appears to be at least the second mother and son arrested in connection with the riot, which took place when Congress had to count the election votes confirming President Joe Biden’s victory over then-President Donald Trump.

Both Sandovals are facing charges that include violent trespassing and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds; and enter or remain in any restricted building or site without lawful authority, according to the FBI.

Deborah Sandoval is also facing obstruction or disruption of the orderly conduct of the government, and her son is experiencing obstruction, obstruction or interference with law enforcement.

But what they allegedly did exactly that day is not clear. According to documentation that appears on the internet, it appears that the court documents that would normally set out the facts of the case have been sealed.

It appears from records that both were also ordered to be released. An email to a federal public protector representing them during a trial Friday was not immediately returned.

A voicemail with a number apparently belonging to Deborah Sandoval was not returned Friday night, and a phone number for her son could not be found immediately.

The riot resulted in five deaths, including a Capitol police officer. Trump has been charged over an article accusing him of ‘inciting insurgency’, but he was acquitted by the Senate, which did not need the two-thirds majority. Seven Republican senators voted to convict.

Another mother and son, Leslie Marie Eisenhart and Eric Gavelek Munchel, were also charged in connection with the riot in Capitol.

Eric Munchel, from Tennessee, was seen in a widespread photo inside the Senate with plastic restrictions, and he was called by some people a ‘zip tie guy’.

A father and son, James Uptmore and Chance Uptmore, of Texas, were also charged, as well as another father and son couple, Kevin Seefried and Hunter Seefried of Delaware.

More than 200 people were federally charged in the riot.
