Iowa extends vaccination eligibility to those 64 years or younger with medical conditions

DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) – As of Monday, March 8, vaccine providers in Iowa can begin vaccinating more populations with priority, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Anyone 64 years of age or younger with medical conditions who are at increased risk for COVID-19 may or may not be eligible (CDC). The CDC outlines the qualifications and recommendations for this group.

The announcement was made because several Iowa counties have declared that they are almost complete for the vaccination of previous population groups. IDPH says that some provinces and vaccine providers will remain focused on previous priority populations until they are more complete.

People with underlying health conditions now join people with disabilities living in group institutions and essential workers as the next eligible groups.

IDPH reports that Iowans will have to remain patient due to the production of vaccines that do not fully meet the demand for vaccines. The White House announced at the end of May this week that there will be enough vaccine for everyone over 16.

On March 21, the 211 call center can help Iowans 65 years and older who need help planning the appointment and do not have access to the technology.
