iOS users report apps crashing after syncing iPhone or iPad with M1 Macs

Some iOS users report that they can no longer open third-party apps on the iPhone or iPad after syncing the devices with the new M1 Macs. The programs crash immediately after opening them, making it impossible to use any installed program.

The first reports of this issue were shared by users from December 2020, a month after the launch of the new Macs with M1 chip. Similar reports have been published on the Apple Support community and also on Reddit.

According to users, third-party apps installed in the App Store simply stopped working after syncing the iPhone or iPad with an M1 Mac with Finder. As shown in a video shared on Reddit, any of these apps close as soon as the user taps to open them. It seems that the error also occurs that the apps are updated or that even new apps can be installed in the App Store.

tl; dr after syncing my iPhone X (at 14.3) with my M1 MBP (at 11.1), no third-party applications are opened. Also unable to install or update from the App Store; the progress circle will fill up and then immediately change into the download icon “cloud”.

Another user said in a comment that he was able to get the installed apps running on the iPhone again after pairing and syncing the device with an old Mac with MacOS Catalina. What caused the error, however, is still unknown, because even Apple Support could not explain it.

I accidentally connected and synced the iPhone and MBP M1 via WLAN … Apps stopped working immediately. Then connected to my old MBP (2012, latest Calatina) and synced. Programs all work again.

If you have an M1 Mac, the best thing you can do now is to prevent your iOS device from syncing with the Mac until Apple fixes the bug with future software updates.
