iOS 15 may end support for these iPhones and iPads in 2021 – BGR

  • A new report claims that iOS 15 will not support the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPad (5th generation), iPad mini 4 or iPad Air 2.
  • iOS 14 already supports the same devices as iOS 13, but reports suggest that iOS 15 will no longer support devices with A9 chips or earlier.
  • Apple may occasionally update iOS 14 in the future to keep unsupported devices safe.

Apple does just as good a job as every smartphone maker that supports its devices after the launch of their devices, but it may not support every iPhone forever. Therefore, each new iOS version usually terminates support for at least one older iPhone model, and it looks like two may be on the hood in 2021.

This week, French website iPhoneSoft reports that a developer at Apple has shared the list of devices supported by the iOS 15 beta when it arrives at WWDC 2021 next June. iPhoneSoft received is correct, Apple will drop support for every device that uses an A9 chip or earlier, including the iPhone 6s. Although the iPhone 6s are over six years old, it is still one of the best-selling devices in resale markets.

Despite all the additions and improvements, iOS 14 supported the same devices as iOS 13, extending the life of several aging devices by at least another year. Since the list above is accurate, the same will not apply to the next major update, as two of the most popular old iPhone models join their predecessors as Apple’s smartphone range continues to grow. That said, just because the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE cannot run iOS 15 does not mean that they will never receive an update again. Just a few days ago, Apple rolled out iOS 12.5.1 to bring COVID-19 notifications about exposure to the iPhone 6, iPhone 5s and some old iPad models. The 6s and SE are likely to receive similar treatment.
