FRISCO, Texas The Cowboys have officially begun the process of interviewing candidates for the vacant defense coordinator post.
On Sunday, the team apparently met with Joe Whitt Jr. and Jason Simmons meets with Mike McCarthy, head coach of Cowboys, and others.
On Friday, the Cowboys parted ways with defensive line coordinator Mike Nolan and coach Jim Tomsula.
Whitt Jr. was the coordinator and secondary coach at Atlanta last season, while Simmons held the same position for the Panthers.
Whitt Jr. has spent more than ten seasons in McCarthy’s staff in Green Bay.
But the Falcons were 29th in total defense last season and ranked last in the NFL in pass defense.
Like Whitt Jr., Simmons also spent nine years with McCarthy in Green Bay. Over the past year in Carolina, the Panthers finished 18th in overall defense and 18th.
But it doesn’t look like the Cowboys are done.
While interviewing two coaches in teams that did not make it to the playoffs, there are now six other teams that lost games in the playoffs this weekend and four more to next weekend.
Another name to consider is George Edwards, who spent last year on the Cowboys staff as a senior defense assistant.
Edwards has a lot of experience as a defense coordinator, most recently in Minnesota where he oversaw the defense for Mike Zimmer’s staff for six years.
Edwards was also the DC in Buffalo, Washington, and was also the Cowboys’ lineout coach from 1998-2001.
He is expected to meet with McCarthy about the position this week.
