Interpol dismisses arrest warrant for Sbarro bomber Ahlam al-Tamimi

The international law enforcement agency Interpol has dropped the arrest warrant for Ahlam Ahmad al-Tamimi, the terrorist responsible for the 2001 Sbarro pizzeria bombing in Jerusalem, in which 15 people, including eight children, were killed.

Arab media sources first reported on March 8 when a letter from Interpol said Tamimi was no longer “subject.”

Her husband, Nizar Tamimi, later confirmed this on Facebook and wrote in a post: “With this legal victory, her name has been removed from the wanted list of Interpol, praise be to God,” according to i24.

Tamimi was arrested and jailed for her role in the bombing, and was sentenced to 16 life sentences. However, she was released in 2011 during the prisoner exchange to free captured IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. Tamimi has confirmed her lack of remorse over the deaths she has caused in several interviews since her release.

After her release, she hosted a weekly show for nearly five years between 2012 and 2016, which was filmed in Jordan and co-produced by Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan.

She has since made many other media appearances, including in the Arabic language of the BBC on 8 October. This upset the families of victims of the bombing, who asked the BBC to apologize, which was later done.

In 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice filed criminal charges against Tamimi, who currently resides in Jordan, but Amman does not have an extradition treaty with Washington. The Trump administration has offered a reward of $ 5 million for her imprisonment, according to several reports.

In response to Interpol’s decision to drop Tamimi’s arrest warrant, the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) has called on the International Law Enforcement Agency to reinstate it immediately.

In a letter to Jürgen Stock, Interpol’s secretary general, dr. Shimon Samuels, director of international relations at SWC, noted that the removal of the arrest warrant “would encourage further terrorism and deny the victims and survivors justice and closure.”

He added that SWC is appealing to you to prevent INTERPOL from falling into Palestinian chaos. ‘
