Intel unveiled its first Iris Xe graphics cards yesterday, but you won’t see them appear in AMD systems. While Nvidia and AMD’s desktop GPUs typically work across different Intel and AMD processors, Intel’s new desktop GPUs are a little more limited for now.
The Iris Xe discrete add-in card is connected to the 9th generation (Coffee Lake-S) and the 10th generation (Comet Lake-S) Intel® Core desktop processors and Intel (R) B460, H410, B365 and H310C chip-based motherboards and sold as part of pre-built systems, ”an Intel spokesman said in a statement. The limitations make more sense when you consider the target market of these first Intel desktop GPUs. Intel is working with Asus and other vendors to sell these cards to system integrators who will integrate them with pre-built systems. These are not GPUs that you can only order online and are meant to be specially bundled.
Intel’s idea with its initial Iris Xe desktop GPUs is to improve only what is currently available on regular computers. Most standard business-based computers have an integrated graphics version, and Intel is trying to offer something that supports more monitors and hardware acceleration.
These cards are not designed to enhance the game or to use it in games. Intel is also working on its Xe-HPG architecture that could eventually deliver cards that could compete with AMD and Nvidia. Hopefully, however, these cards will not be limited to Intel systems in the same way.
