Instagram considers blocking users from sharing feed photos to stories

Instagram is now considering a major change to the operation of the Instagram Stories feature. The company removed the option to share posts from the feed with stories for some users as part of a new test.

As reported by Social media today (via The edge), Instagram users have been notified about the upcoming change that eliminates the option to share a photo or video again from the normal stream to stories.

The company claims that some people do not like to see the same content of the feed in stories as each feature was created for a different purpose. A banner will appear at the top of the app with the following message for users selected to participate in this test:

We hear from our community that they want to see fewer posts in Stories. During this test you will not be able to add an entry post to your story.

Instagram told the report that the tests are being done “within a few selected regions”, while also saying: “there is no plan to implement this change more widely at this stage.” It is unclear how the social network determines which users from which regions will lose access to the share option.

On a related note, Instagram has started advising content creators not to post TikTok videos on Reels – this is the Instagram platform that competes directly with TikTok. Although Instagram does not ban TikTok videos, the company calls for new roles to be ‘original and authentic’.
