Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air plane loses contact after taking off from Jakarta

Sriwijaya Air flight SJY 182 from Jakarta to Pontianak lost contact at 14:40 Western Indonesian time (02:40 ET) on Saturday, according to the state-run Antara news agency.

In a statement, Sriwijaya Air said they were “in contact with various related parties to get more information” about the incident and that they “will issue an official statement immediately” when more information is clear.

Flight SJY 182 lost 11 nautical miles north of Jakarta’s Soekarno – Hatta International Airport at 11,000 feet, Antara reported.

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, Bazarnas, has sent a ship to the Thousand Islands – a chain of islands north of Jakarta’s coast – to investigate where the plane is thought to have lost contact, Cahyono said.

The Ministry of Transport said it was investigating and coordinating with Basarnas and the National Committee for Transport Safety.

The aircraft, registered PK CLC, is a Boeing 737-500.

A Boeing spokesman said in a statement to CNN that they were “aware of media reports from Jakarta, and that they are keeping a close eye on the situation.”

“We are working to gather more information,” they said.
