Indianapolis shooting: Eight people killed during shooting at FedEx plant, police say

Police were called to the facility at about 11 p.m. local time for what has become the country’s deadliest shooting since ten people were killed in a grocery shooting in Colorado on March 22.

The names of the victims or gunman were not immediately released.

“The (armed man) entered the parking lot, and I believe he got out of his vehicle and started shooting quickly … The first shooting took place in the parking lot, and then he went inside and did not get very far. “Craig McCartt, deputy chief of Indianapolis Police, told CNN early Friday.

Police “have come to a very chaotic scene, with victims and witnesses walking around everywhere,” McCartt said.

McCartt said he believes the gunman killed himself when officers encountered him. No police officer was shot, he said.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, said Indianapolis police spokesman Genae Cook.

At least four survivors were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, as well as someone with an injury presumably caused by shrapnel, McCartt said.

Police said one person was in critical condition.

The gunman had at least one weapon – a rifle of some sort – and investigators tried to determine if he had more, McCartt said.

Police tried to make sense of the crime scene early Friday as relatives of FedEx employees gathered at a nearby hotel to wait for their loved ones.

“I thought I was going to shoot”

Two employees in the building told CNN subsidiary WISH at the time that they had heard as many as ten gunshots.

At first, Jeremiah Miller and Timothy Boillat thought the sound was coming from a car, but after hearing more, Miller got up and saw a man with a weapon, he said.

Family members are waiting for information about their loved ones outside the FedEx facility.

“After hearing the shooting, I saw a corpse on the floor behind a vehicle,” Boillat said. The two men left the building and watched as about 30 police vehicles responded.

“Thank God he was here because I thought I was going to shoot,” Miller told the station.

Police are asking anyone who was at the scene and possibly left for safety or medical treatment to contact them to provide information about the shooting.

FedEx said in a statement that it was aware of the “tragic shooting” at the Indianapolis plant.

“Safety is our top priority and we think of all those affected. We are working to gather more information and working with investigating authorities,” company spokesman Jim Masilak said in an email to CNN.

U.S. Representative Andre Carson, a Democrat whose district includes Indianapolis, tweeted that he was sad by the mass shooting.

“I am communicating with local authorities to get all the details about the attack, and my office is ready to help anyone affected.”

CNN’s Joe Sutton and Keith Allen contributed to this report.
