Indian father arrested for alleged beheaded daughter, 17: report

A man has reportedly been arrested in India this week for allegedly beheading his 17-year-old daughter because he did not approve of the man she was apparently dating.

Residents of North Indian state Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district called police when they saw the man, identified as Sarvesh Kumar, walking on a road in the town carrying his daughter’s head, according to New Delhi Television ( NDTV).

Officers shot video of their interaction with Kumar, who they said said he locked the girl in her room and decapitated her with a sharp object, BBC News reports.

“I did it. There was no one else,” he apparently said in the video. “I closed the latch and did it. The body is in the room.”

Kapil Deo Singh, a police officer posted in Hardoi, said Kumar was arrested and an officer seen in a photo wearing the girl’s head was suspended, NDTV reported.

Hundreds are killed in India because of romantic relationships that their families do not approve of (they are known as ‘honor killings’) and Uttar Pradesh has the largest number of crimes against women of any Indian state, reports the country’s National Crime Records Bureau. according to the BBC and NDTV in 2019.
