NEW DELHI – A fire broke out in the intensive care unit of a hospital in western India early Saturday, killing ten babies.

According to a preliminary investigation, the fire was caused by a short circuit, police officer VS Chavan said.

The news agency Press Trust of India said the babies are 1 to 3 months old.

Firefighters rescued seven babies from the newborn care unit of the hospital in Bhandara, a city in the state of Maharashtra, nearly 1,000 kilometers south of New Delhi.
