According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States administered 100 million doses of Covid-19 on Friday.
About 35 million people have been completely vaccinated, which according to the CDC accounts for 13.5% of the adult American population. More than 65.9 million people received at least one survey of the two doses, the CDC said.
The milestone is the fulfillment of President Joe Biden’s goal to deliver at least 100 million shots within his first 100 days in office.
The administration has slowly accelerated the rate of vaccinations since Biden took office. The White House originally sought to deliver one million shots a day, which some public health specialists described as a low target. According to the CDC, the US scored 2.9 million shots on Friday.
There are now three Covid-19 vaccines that have received emergency permits from the Food and Drug Administration. Moderna and Pfizer’s dual-dose vaccine were approved for emergency use in December, and Johnson & Johnson’s single-vaccine was approved last month.
The White House worked with the manufacturers to speed up production and increase the total supply of shots fired at the US. Biden has announced that the government plans to secure an additional 100 million doses of J&J vaccine.
J&J currently has an agreement with the US government to offer 100 million doses by the end of June, although White House officials said this week that the company will be able to deliver the doses by May. This is thanks to an agreement in which J&J rival Merck will help make doses of the vaccine, White House Covid-19 response coordinator Jeff Zients said at a news conference on Friday.
Zients added that both Moderna and Pfizer are expected to deliver 200 million doses of their vaccines by the end of May.
“This is more than enough vaccine provision to vaccinate all adult Americans by the end of May,” Zients said. “Now we need to increase the number of vaccines, as we have already said, and the number of places where Americans can be vaccinated.”
