In Amazon’s Super Bowl ad, Michael B. Jordan plays as Alexa

Amazon is no stranger to Super Bowl ads, and the company has another ready for this year’s big game. In the 2021 commercial, actor Michael B. Jordan, from whom you may know Erik Killmonger, plays Black panther of quarter, Vince Howard van Friday night lights, as the Alexa smart assistant of the company.

In the ad, a woman dreams of what it would be like if Alexa were to be personified as the very attractive Jordan, and she was fit with the AI. At one point, for example, the woman asks Alexa to dim the lights, and Jordan pulls out his shirt in response. (Her partner then humorously rushes over to demand that Alexa turn on the lights again.)

The ad is a fun twist on Super Bowl ads that use attractive women to sell something. (Some of Carl’s Jr. and GoDaddy’s infamous Super Bowl ads come to mind.) It’s all made so much better by Jordan’s frightening eyes, which is the unnatural glow blue you get from the rings on an Amazon Echo. device can recognize.

You can see a 60-second version of the ad at the top of this post. A 90-second version is embedded in a tweet from Amazon.

This is not the first time Amazon has used a celebrity to personify Alexa in a Super Bowl ad. In the 2018 ad, the voice talents of Gordon Ramsay, Rebel Wilson, Cardi B and Anthony Hopkins appear as Alexa when it “loses” its voice. And if you want to remind many years of other star-studded Alexa ads from Amazon, here is a list of the company’s Super Bowl shorts:
