Illinois fights Illini basketball player Ayo Dosunmu indefinitely with facial injury

The school’s star guard Ayo Dosunmu is out indefinitely after suffering a facial injury, the school announced on Thursday.

Dosunmu sustained the injury in Tuesday’s loss to the state of Michigan. He was committed late in the game by first-year student Mady Sissoko by the Spartans; Sissoko was sent off after being beaten with a flagrant offense of 2. However, Dosunmu did not leave the match.

Brad Underwood did not offer a specific timeline for Dosunmu’s return, but said he would not play against Nebraska on Thursday night.

“Ayo is eager to play,” Underwood said. “We are hopeful for his return to our team.”

Dosunmu is a wooden award candidate with an average of 21.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assistants. The 6-foot guard is no. 35 on ESPN’s NBA Draft Rankings.

In Illinois, number 5 in the AP poll this week, its winning streak of seven games was cut Tuesday against Michigan State. The Fighting Illini is 16-6, 12-4 overall in the Big Ten.
