CHICAGO (WLS) – Illinois health officials have reported 4,156 new cases of COVID-19 and 71 deaths.

The total number of cases in Illinois now stands at 1,120,528, with a total of 19,138 deaths, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The test positivity rate is a measure that the state started providing at the end of October. It is calculated by using the total number of positive tests above the total number of tests. This is the yardstick by which state health officials are accustomed to making decisions about mitigation.

Chicago moving forward?

The city of Chicago could move on to phase 4 of Illinois’ reopening plan in the coming days, if the test positivity remains below 6.5%.

However, Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the capacity constraints on indoor eateries will not change, saying it will be “irresponsible and dangerous” and undo the progress that is being made.

However, bar seating will be allowed, and the table size inside can increase up to six people. Bars and restaurants can also stay open until midnight.

A total of 1,304,475 doses of vaccine were delivered to suppliers in Illinois, including Chicago, with another 496,100 doses allocated to federal government partners for long-term care facilities, bringing the total number delivered in Illinois to 1,800,575.

Johnson & Johnson’s long-awaited vaccine protects against COVID-19 with just one shot – not as strong as some two-shot competitors, but is still useful for a world that needs more doses.

J&J said on Friday that the single-vaccine vaccine in the US and seven other countries was 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe diseases, and much more protective – 85% – against the most severe symptoms.

Only 1.4% of the Illinois population received both doses of a vaccine.

In Chicago, health officials said they receive only about 35,000 vaccine doses per week, so they can only administer 5,000 doses per day for vaccines that require two doses.

“The federal government commands us to do first and second doses and to make sure everyone gets the doses on time,” Pritzker said.

Instead of vaccinating as many people as possible with the first dose, government officials said the state does keep vaccinations in reserve for second doses.

IDPH reports that a total of 887,845 vaccine doses have been administered, including 131,401 at long-term facilities. The running average of vaccines administered over seven days is 38,738.

The IDPH says that the distribution numbers of vaccines are reported in real time, and that the number of vaccines lags by as much as 72 hours.

Pritzker said there are plans to start boarding as soon as the stock of vaccine increases. He also announced the creation of a new portal, coronavirus.illinois.gov, to provide the latest information on vaccines.

As of Thursday night, it was reported that 2,735 patients in Illinois were in the hospital with COVID-19. Of these, 532 patients were in the ICU and 297 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
