Coronavirus test sites in Chicago will be closed for “bad weather” from Friday.

According to a notice from the city, test sites from the city will remain closed from Friday to Wednesday.

Thursday’s storm will be followed by a deep freezing point that will stretch next week. Temperatures may not rise above the single digits, and wind chills can reach minus 30 degrees in what city officials call an ‘arctic explosion’.

Everyone who needs to be tested over the next few days should contact their healthcare provider.

“Honestly, from a safety perspective, we do not want the staff and volunteers to be exposed,” said Dr. Allison Arwady, CDPH, said. ‘And there is access to the site. We do not want people to walk. ‘

The icy conditions also forced Loretto Hospital on the West Side to move its run-in tests inside.

“We are actually transforming our ground floor physiotherapy room, which is quite large and very spacious, into a COVID test area,” said Afya Khan, an infection control officer at Loretto Hospital.

The city’s indoor vaccination sites will remain open, as will the mass vaccination center at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake. Officials there said the need to turn staff out of the cold regularly could cause delays.

Northwestern University professor Hani Mahmassani, an expert in transportation and logistics, said vaccination clinics are unlikely to show up.

“There will be problems in the staff,” she explained, “and also non-actions towards the patients. And in some cases you do not want patients to come out in this weather, especially for some older people group be vaccinated. “
