IKEA has confirmed that the images circulating with a cardboard box PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S are genuine and were taken from an Illinois location.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S have been very popular since their respective launches, which may need new ways to incorporate the next generation of consoles in homes. For this purpose, at least one branch of the home furniture store IKEA offers useful models.
What started a rumor on Reddit has now been confirmed. Employees at IKEA in Schaumberg, Illinois, have built cardboard cutouts for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to help people better decide what kind of entertainment centers they want. When user TomaccoTastesLikeGma posted the photos for the first time, the photos were suspected by some to be part of a joke. However, IKEA recently confirmed to ComicBook.com that the images are authentic.

“Our associates are always looking for creative ways to help our customers with storage solutions,” an IKEA spokesman said. “We can confirm that the images circulating online come from our IKEA Schaumburg store.” The spokesman added that the workers had come up with the idea on their own. They wanted to show how the new game consoles would fit into IKEA storage units. Therefore, they built cardboard models, complete with dimensions.
The designs and how much it looks like the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X quickly gained attention on the internet. Reddit users expressed amusement over what was written on the side of the cardboard version of the PS5. The model was adorned with the label: “Which IKEA media storage unit will be able to fit my new, moderate, large console?”
Many in the gaming community have experienced issues with the latest consoles. Stock for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 was limited at launch. Over the past few months, retailers have been able to sporadically offer more units. Due to the demand, however, retailers are running out fast.
Despite the difficulties some had in finding a new PS5 or Series X, sales figures were still strong. Industry experts blame, at least in part, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic for the limited number of consoles available. Both Microsoft and Sony have assured consumers that they will increase production in 2021.
PlayStation 5 sales figures recently broke an all-time record for launch month. Sony and its PlayStation 4 reached the previous high point. The record sales figures are still coming in, despite some reports that the consoles are not selling as well in some places, including Sony’s home base in Japan.
