So you say there’s a chance?
John McClain, who has covered the NFL at the Houston Chronicle for more than 45 years, said on SportsRadio 610 in Houston that the Texans remain behind the scenes in their public stance about not trading quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Unless the Jets convince them otherwise. There’s a caveat that will make New York – and the rest of the AFC East – buzz.
‘Anyone who says [the Texans] called the Eagles, not true, ”McClain said. “If they traded him, it would be the Jets. No, they did not contact anyone about Watson’s dissertation. ”
McClain previously suggested that the Texans’ asking price start with two first-rounders, two second-rounders and two young defenders.
“They do not call teams. Teams call them, ”McClain said. “They told everyone they were not trading Watson. Does not mean they will not do it in the end, but I guarantee you if they did, [it] would not be for Carson Wentz and the Eagles. ”
Watson has a non-trade provision, so if the Texans decide to trade him, he could have an impact on the destination.
If a highly speculated exchange from one disgruntled quarterback to another disgruntled quarterback is off the table, it leaves the Jets, Dolphins, Panthers, Bears, 49ers and Washington as the teams most likely to compete for Watson’s services.
The Colts appear to be the favorites to land Wentz when traded. Indianapolis would be an unlikely destination for Watson because they are division partners with the Texans.
