The representatives of California, Young Kim (R) and Michelle Steel (R), revoked their endorsement of the candidate for Texas’ Congress Sery Kim (R) after she said that she “does not want Chinese immigrants here at all”.
In a statement issued Friday and shared with The Hill on Saturday, lawmakers said they “cannot in good conscience” continue to support Sery Kim, who is electing him to represent the 6th Congressional District of Texas.
The GOP Congresswomen previously endorsed Sery Kim, a Korean American in early March.
As the first Korean American Republican women to serve in Congress, we want to empower and enhance fellow AAPI members. [Asian American and Pacific Island] community that wants to serve their communities, ”the legislators wrote.
Lawmakers said they had asked Sery Kim to apologize, but noted that her words “contradict what we stand for.”
“We will continue to speak to our AAPI community,” they added.
The statement comes after Seri Kim attacked China and Chinese immigrants during a GOP candidate forum on Wednesday The Dallas Morning News.
“I do not want them here at all,” said Sery Kim. “They are stealing our intellectual property. They give us coronavirus. They do not hold themselves responsible. ”
After the audience applauded her remarks, Sery Kim followed: “Honestly, I can say that because I’m Korean.”
The comments come amid an increase in anti-Asian violence in the United States over the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus is thought to have originated in Wuhan, China.
The issue of anti-Asian hatred caught fever last month when a shooting in several spas in the Atlanta area killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent.
Sery Kim confirmed to CNN that she made the remarks, but said that it was aimed at the Communist Party of China and not at all at Asian Americans.
In response to the withdrawn notes, Sery Kim told CNN that she was “shocked that the liberal media is targeting me, an Asian and an immigrant, in an attempt to portray me as an anti-Asian and anti-Asian anti-immigrant just because he spoke out against the oppressive Chinese Communist Party. ”
